The Photographic Sublime – how artistic traditions of the Sublime influence photography of the past, present and futurePhotojournalist Thomas Peck shows how the traditions of the Sublime influenced early landscape photographers through to the modern day. With examples from painters like Turner & Caspar David Friedrich & photos from Carleton E Watkins to M Kenna to S Salgado to A Adams to H Sugimoto, plus the author’s own pictures. A fascinating insight into a cultural trend which is sure to provoke some debate, especially when we look into the future at how photography and the Sublime might interact in the 21st century…

We will again be joined by Gallery for this talk

Outings

Assuming travel and socially-distanced outdoor meeting is permissible at the time we will hold two ‘sunset’ meets at the coast in August. Unfortunately we will not be able to car-share, so will just meet at the location.

Monday 3rd August: Saltburn – a now nearly traditional get together. Meet by the pier at 7.30. Sunset is at about 9 pm, high tide as about 5pm so the water will be retreating

Monday 17th August: Saltwick Bay. Meet by the entrance to the caravan site (there is parking overlooking the beach) at 7 pm. Sunset is at 8.30, low tide at 10 pm so again the water should be fairly well out by sunset.

The descent down the steps is quite steep, and the rocky shore will be wet and potentially slippery. Bring a torch for getting off the rocks after sunset.
